Brass Buddha, Nepal

Brass central Asian Buddha, possibly Nepal in Bhumiprasha Mudra position. This position is the "Earth Witness Gesture". It alludes to a pivotal moment in Buddha's enlightenment when he called upon the Earth to witness his triumph over the temptations and distractions of Mara, the demon of illusion. This gesture is symbolized by the right hand touching the ground with the left hand resting in the lap. First half 20th century, 33 by 24,5 by 17 cm.
