Chantal Masinga, Breath Between the Clouds, oil on canvas, 2025

Born in 2002, Johannesburg-based artist Chantal Masinga discovered her passion for oil painting while studying at Lilian Grey Art School, where she developed a deep appreciation for vibrant colours and textured surfaces. Since entering the art scene in 2022, she has embraced emotive, expressive brushwork to explore themes of identity, individuality, healing, and introspection.

In 2023, Masinga completed the Business of Being an Artist course, debuting in the group exhibition Choice Assorted, which introduced her to a broader audience and artistic network. Her career has since gained momentum, with participation in exhibitions such as The Future in Motion, the Summer Exhibition at Art School Africa, Contra Joburg, and The Arts Company Soweto (TACS), among others.

Her work uses colour as a language of its own—capable of carrying emotion, memory, and meaning—inviting viewers to reflect on their own lived experiences. Each piece is both a chapter of her personal journey and an offering for shared contemplation.

Breath Between the Clouds embodies this philosophy, capturing a moment of calm and clarity suspended between motion and stillness.
