Dustin August, untitled, repurposed wooden box, 2025
Independent and self-taught, multi-disciplinary visual artist Dustin August works across photography, graphic design, and illustration, with a formal background in architecture that informs the structure and precision of his creative approach. His practice is rooted in process and experimentation, returning often to the themes of deconstruction, layering, and transparency.
Guided by a commitment to representing the queer body, August’s work is both a celebration and an exploration—fluid and experimental, yet deliberate and composed. It seeks to capture the complexities and nuances of the queer experience, encouraging visibility and an unapologetic claim to space.
In 2022, August completed his first public mural with HALLS at The Playground in Braamfontein, which appeared on the cover of BIZART magazine (Issue 03, Spring 2022). Since then, he has created murals at Blackbrick Hotel in Sandton and Math Restaurant in Waterfall, exhibited at Open Studios at August House (2023), and Turbine Art Fair (2024), and is currently part of the RMB Talent Unlocked 2024 programme.
The Sureness in Knowing embodies August’s layered, tactile approach, merging material experimentation with a deeply personal visual language.
