Nwabisa Ntlokwana, Folded in resilience, Jacaranda wood, 2025
Born in 1988 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, Nwabisa Ntlokwana is a Johannesburg-based
contemporary visual artist whose work breathes life into themes of environmental
sustainability and motherhood. With a rich cultural background and a deep appreciation
for the vibrant energy of Africa, Nwabisa's art is a celebration of renewal and
transformation, seamlessly blending traditional influences with contemporary
aesthetics. Nwabisa's journey into the art world began with a keen interest in the transformative
potential of everyday materials. This interest evolved into a passionate commitment to
sustainability, as she started creating wall sculptures using upcycled materials. Her
work is characterised by its use of texture and form, bringing discarded , found objects
into a new realm of artistic expression. As a mother, Nwabisa finds profound inspiration in her personal experiences, which infuse her art with authenticity and emotional depth. Her exploration of modern
motherhood adds a powerful narrative layer to her sculptures, inviting viewers to engage
with her reflections on this universal yet deeply personal theme.
My series, 'Rebirth,' marks a pivotal transformation in my life and career. As I transitioned into motherhood and shifted from fashion to cultural work, I found myself reborn as an artist. 'Eternal Balanced Dance' is a performative piece that strips away the romanticized expectations of motherhood, revealing the everyday reality of navigating this new role. For me, motherhood is not just a state, but a daily dance – waking up, managing routines, work, lifestyle, and relationships. It's a journey of growth, where one masters the choreography of motherhood over time. Through this piece, I aim to appreciate the beauty in this daily dance. Another piece, 'A Friend of Mine,' celebrates the power of community in motherhood. I've been fortunate to have a supportive network, and I want to highlight the value of having someone to count on. This piece emphasizes the importance of community in navigating the challenges of motherhood. 'Shedding Old Ways' is a transformative piece that marks my evolution as an artist, mother, and individual. It's about embracing my true self, without resistance or struggle. Through these works, I aim to spark realistic conversations about motherhood, sharing my own experiences and stories within my community
