Shandre Rabie is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Johannesburg. She is currently completing her Honours in Visual Art at the University of Johannesburg. She works predominantly with fabric, allowing for various forms of manipulation inorder to achieve delicate finishes, using fabric paint and embroidery with thread to create "shells" of people. Her work is driven by a fascination with identity politics and the specifics of her context. Shandre identifies as coloured or mixed race and this greatly influences her current body of work, which is centred around the crime and conflict in her home neighbourhood, in Riverlea, Johannesburg. Through her work she aims to create awareness around the inequalities in coloured communities and the effects these issues have on the lives of the people in her community.
